Bottom Line

This narrative review identifies three categories of patient engagement strategies for atherosclerosis care: personalized education, digital health interventions, and genetic testing. However, as a narrative rather than systematic review, it provides insufficient rigorous evidence synthesis to guide clinical practice changes. The authors acknowledge varying levels of supporting data, suggesting the evidence base remains inconsistent. While the identified strategies appear promising, clinicians should seek more robust systematic reviews or randomized controlled trials before implementing these approaches. The US healthcare focus limits direct applicability to Australian practice without consideration of local healthcare structures, PBS listings, and TGA approvals for digital health interventions.

Evidence: Weak

Key Findings

  • P Value: Not applicable for narrative review

  • Effect Size: Not quantified - narrative synthesis only

  • Primary Outcome: Patient engagement and compliance with cardiovascular care recommendations

  • Nnt Or Sensitivity: Not calculated or reported

  • Confidence Interval: Not provided

Clinical Application

Moderate - requires implementation of digital health infrastructure and health literacy assessment Limited direct applicability - would require adaptation to Australian healthcare system, Medicare Benefits Schedule, and TGA-approved digital health technologies Patients with atherosclerosis in primary and secondary prevention settings

Abstract

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Despite continuing therapeutic advances in cardiovascular disease, it remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the US. The current challenge is not the development of therapeutics but rather patient engagement and compliance with medical recommendations. Here in this narrative expert review we discuss strategies to improve patient engagement in cardiovascular care. RECENT FINDINGS: There is a varying level of data surrounding different patient education strategies in the care of atherosclerosis. There are three main categories of interventions reviewed with evidence of efficacy: personalized and accessible patient education, digital health interventions, and implementation of personalized medicine via genetic testing. Implementing strategies in the clinic such as personalizededucation at an accessible health literacy level, digital health interventions, and even genetic testing may improve patient engagement and outcomes.
